Surakarta, or better known as Solo, has a rich history that spans from the era of the Mataram Kingdom to the period of Dutch colonization and the struggle for Indonesia's independence. Originally a part of the Mataram
Sultanate in the 16th century, it later split into the Surakarta Sunanate and the Yogyakarta Sultanate in 1755. Under the rule of the Surakarta Sunanate, Solo grew into an important center of Javanese culture.
The Dutch colonial period brought significant European colonial influence, while Solo also took part in the struggle for Indonesia's independence with figures such as Slamet Riyadi. After independence, Solo continued to
preserve its cultural heritage through traditional arts, dance, and crafts, while also developing its tourism sector through the remnants of palaces and historical sites that attract tourists from around the world.
Thus, Surakarta remains one of the prominent centers of Javanese culture, with a harmonious blend of ancient traditions and evolving modernity.
